On April
26, 2002 we began construction of a combined garage/apartment. We
intend to occupy the apartment portion of the building and temporarily close off the car bays to provide
ourselves with approximately 950 square feet of living/storage area. The plan is to live
primarily in the apartment and use the car bays as storage while we demolish the
existing house and construct a new place to call home. This is exciting for us
and we are enthusiastically throwing ourselves into this latest adventure!
Here are a
few images of what we hope to accomplish in the next few months. Enjoy!

First,
here is an idea of what the exterior should look like when completed. |
Next, we
have a general overview of the interior plan.

And now a
detailed view showing some of the interior dimensions.

Some shots
of the construction of the footings and foundation walls.

The footings and walls are
done, now for the plumbing and backfilling.

The wood has arrived! Now
it's time to get to work.

After the first day of framing
and raising walls - we had no idea we could do this!

Another day, another wall
section...

The walls are standing and the
sheathing is almost finished. It's starting to look like a real building.

The trusses arrive!

With the help of a friend and
neighbour with a good heart and a strong back the trusses were up in three days.

Now it's time to start the roof
sheathing and then the shingles...

We're almost there! The cement is
poured and most of the exterior work is finished. The electrician will be here
November 18th and it will be move in time shortly afterward. Whew! Just beating
the winter weather...

For those of you who have been following our progress - Thank
you! Your enquiries and encouragement have been appreciated.
November 23, 2002, we began habiting the new building in a
limited way. We have our bedroom suite and television moved in and are in the
process of setting up the lavatory and kitchen areas. Before we can accomplish
either of those tasks, however, the sewer connection must be made to the
existing septic system. Henry is working on that and we expect that to be
complete Wednesday or Thursday. more to come later...
Drop
us a line if you'd like to know more or just want to say 'hi!'. If you're in
the neighbourhood, stop in and have a look, but don't be surprised if we ask you to
lend a hand. Don't be shy - roll up your sleeves and pick up a hammer!
On May 6, 2005 we began the
demolition/construction process. The old farmhouse, built in 1833, had to
come down to make way for new construction. To see the old house
coming down please visit our
New House Construction page. |
